Peruvian boutique Bullard Falla Ezcurra has opened a new ofce in Madrid headed by founding partner Alfredo Bullard as part of an “ambitious international expansion plan”.

BFE, as the rm is known, launched its new ofce yesterday – the rst it has opened outside of Lima. Based in Madrid’s El Viso neighbourhood, the ofce will be supported part time by senior associate Milan Pejnovic and associate Rodrigo La Rosa.

Bullard says the move is “backed up by more than 20 years of experience in the market” and comes in response to the “growing demand” of Spanish and European multinationals operating in Latin America.

BFE’s Peru-based managing partner Andrea Cadenas adds that the new ofce is the “next natural step in our internationalisation process”.

BFE was founded in 2000 by Bullard, one of the most recognisable names in Peruvian arbitration, and former Shearman & Sterling lawyer Huáscar Ezcurra, offering expertise in arbitration and competition law.

The rm is currently co-counselling with King & Spalding for a consortium in a US$285 million ICSID claim against Peru over a concession to build and operate an airport for tourists travelling to Machu Picchu.

Other BFE clients have included a subsidiary of Argentina’s Pluspetrol, for which it won a pair of favourable awards in two arbitrations worth US$550 million against the Peruvian National Oil Company; and the Brazilian-owned La Virgen, for which it secured a favourable award in a hydroelectric dispute.

Outside of Latin America, BFE’s clients include Italian construction company SICIM. The rm has previously been used by China International Water & Electric Corporation, part of the state-owned CTG group.

Bullard also has a busy arbitrator practice, sitting in several ICSID cases, and recently served as vice chair of a Madrid International Arbitration Centre commission seeking to establish when disputes should fall under its competence.
